A unique and patented window system, developed to address issues arising when trying to create a safe environment for patients in secure mental health units, is now being specified across a wide variety of healthcare buildings for its many other benefits, including ventilation.
The high performance window system, which is now the industry standard in the mental health sector, is the brainchild of the team at Britplas. They came up with the clever and innovative Safevent window system when Mersey Care NHS Trust invited them to design an anti-ligature window for use in their Rathbone Secure Unit.
The Safevent window comprises a double fronted window and a free sliding internal or external sash. The window has one glazed area and the other is fitted with a stainless steel mesh. The mesh is not visible so delivers security in a sensitive and subtle manner.
Although initially developed as an anti-ligature product, the window system’s in-line sliding action provides patients/occupants with a greater degree of control whilst overcoming the 100mm restriction on opening and maintaining complete security. The windows offer the real benefit of allowing maximum levels of natural light and ventilation whilst being totally secure and for this reason have now been specified across non mental health hospitals, schools and commercial buildings.
The windows are manufactured to an exceptionally high standard and every component can withstand considerable force. The Safevent window is available in aluminium or uPVC and units can be manufactured in virtually any colour. Manual, mechanical and automatic electronic versions are available.
